The Descanso Gardens in Spring are glorious! The photos below give you a sneak preview of what you will see when you visit the gardens in March and April.
In the Japanese Garden the azaleas and cherry trees bloom. Take the path to the east side of the Japanese garden to go to the Lilac Garden where you will see and smell fragrant lilacs grown for hot climates.
Families flock to the gardens to see the tulips and daffodils. While these flowers are uncommon in most Southern California gardens–they do better in colder climates– Descanso has traditionally created these displays.
The sea of tulips and daffodils last only for a very short time. This photo was taken on March 30th.
The Ceanothus in the California Native Plant area of Descanso Gardens is commonly called “California Lilac“. It is, however, not a lilac at all.
Descanso Gardens, however, specializes in growing true Lilacs (Syringa) that will survive in hot, dry climates. Lilacs are more commonly grown in cold winter areas.
Of course, you will find hundreds of camellia trees for which Descanso Gardens are famous. The gardens originated as a commercial camellia plantation.
