Because this Botanic Garden is so close to the humid air of the ocean delicate fuchsias thrive but still need a shade cover.

Situated less than one mile from the Pacific Ocean on the Palos Verdes Peninsula near Los Angeles, the South Coast Botanic Garden is little known, but quite beautiful, especially in summer.

Its 87 acres contain more than 2,500 species of plants with particular emphasis on plants and trees suitable for a Mediterranean climate.

Despite the fact that the gardens are in a damp microclimate, cactus and succulents thrive beautifully.

Paths wind through the gardens leading from the extensive rose garden to the Mediterranean garden then on to the cactus garden.
